The Fiddletree • Otis
A. Tomas
This
book and CD set tells the story of the fiddletree,
a Cape Breton sugar maple transformed by violin maker Otis
Tomas
into an ensemble of musical instruments. The CD offers a 70
minute recording of original music composed by Otis Tomas for
the fiddletree ensemble, and played
by Otis and Sarah McFadyen - violins: Mairi Campbell
- viola; Abby Newton - cello; Laoise Kelly - harp; Paul
MacDonald
- guitar; and Claudine Langille - mandolin. All
the instruments were built from the single maple tree – and
recorded in a circle. www.fiddletree.com

Reissues
Angus Chisholm & Bill Lamey
In
1978 and 1979 Shanachie Records released these
tributes to Cape Breton's
great fiddlers on
LP and Cassettes – compilations
of the cherished
78RPM recordings
made between
1930 and 1952. In their day, these
78RPMs became immediate
classics, the medleys
setting standards.
The timely Shanachie
reissues
became classics
again,
to a whole new generation
of musicians in
Cape Breton, Ireland
and Scotland. Long out of print,
these historic reproductions
were digitally re-mastered,
in high resolution,
directly from the
Shanachie masters.
Available in digital
download format,
these
albums are downloadable
in either MP3 or
CD Quality. Included
are PDF booklets
of the original annotations
and notes, along with
an appendix that
links to available
sources
and selected free
transcriptions.
